<br />
The Cryptocoryne affinis from this habitat is interesting as they are found at an altitude around 700m above sea level. They are found along white sandy bank of a stream above a huge waterfall in the state of Selangor, Malaysia.<br />

The variety of Affinis found at the lower section of the river has a different form and shares some similarity with some of the Pahang variety.</div>

Each year during the Monsoon, plant or fish collection is impossible as conditions of rivers becomes dangerous and unpredictable.<br />
<br />
We managed to get some of these below despite fast current and high waters. I think the rain is going to pour flood many areas over the next few weeks. So plants maybe hard to come by till the break in February or March. Anyway we are happy to be able to offer some in the mean time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFx_Q2GlRmOMehyphenhyphenC1WYSQu5XP4h3oapvqiQHNZSsdTSfnUfz2op5tj8y1j0QdJIl-KSLHxSKzYOSosUmCjf7d6B5AKgFUxNmiSgvrlHSdUX5wNKOXto16Gb5IhjKqGCZsXaKYwWleMJxc/s1600/020a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFx_Q2GlRmOMehyphenhyphenC1WYSQu5XP4h3oapvqiQHNZSsdTSfnUfz2op5tj8y1j0QdJIl-KSLHxSKzYOSosUmCjf7d6B5AKgFUxNmiSgvrlHSdUX5wNKOXto16Gb5IhjKqGCZsXaKYwWleMJxc/s400/020a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see the water at the river is already rising and murkier than usual, making collection very hard and impossible if you are not familiar with the river.</div>

Before the journey began, we were experiencing a lot of rain and weather may adversely affect our trip. However, we thank God for good weather and safety through out this trip. We were unable to locate the Zukalii nor Decus Silvae but came across some Cryptocoryne initially thought to be Cordata or Nurii. The first patch had no spathes to be seen. But some of the plants displays very nice pink leaves in immersed form.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we head deeper into the fresh water swamp, we came across the second batch of Cryptoryne. These are quite interesting as they are unknown species at this stage. The specimens collected have spathes and seedling pods. It is possible that this could be a new species that is discovered as we were unable to obtain any description of this Crypt from various sources so far. Needless to say, samples will be sent to Europe for further study.</div>

These plants were just collected 2 days ago from a relatively new location in Sarawak and spots pink veins on their leaves. I have started to go back to the jungles after my right knee injury healed about 2 weeks ago. Hope to add more photos as time permits during this very busy month.<br />

Red spots at the throat of the spathe, when I spliced open the kettle, immediately a tiny fruit fly escaped. Anyway there were 2 other flies that did not survive as shown in the picture below.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So clearly the plants depend on the seasons and insects to help propagation. Want to see some flower in your Cryptocoryne collection. Try inducing fruit flies into your plant habitat. Until my next posting, all the best wishes!</div>

We just managed to get some new stock of this interesting variant from the Cryptocoryne Ferruginea family. This Ferruginea is slightly evolved from the shorter and broader leaf version more commonly seen. When we first came across it we were not sure if this was the Ferruginea or Ideii as they are quite similar. Even splicing the spathe to examine reveals slight difference but like most discoveries, we must admit that it is all good learning experience. These easy to grow and flower Crypts are have long narrow leaves. We hope to be able to post some more new pictures soon.Daron Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445475669260930653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1822446193625544497.post-57420668713914911092013-03-08T16:32:00.000+08:002013-03-08T16:34:36.384+08:00Cryptocoryne Ferruginea and Sp "Golden Ring"Sorry folks, I've been on the road much and will try to keep up with new postings more. Some of you emailed me earlier, please wait and I will respond as soon as possible. Today I want to share a couple of lovely Cryptocorynes in our collection.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Cryptocoryne Ferruginea 'Bau' displaying pretty purple and silver dust and nice tiger stripes. These emerged form do look spectacular and I hope to add new photographs of their inflorescence one of these days.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRaNXD5OkmHM4SeQzBF10pEtlaWHSbE4McakXYbsiBZERcDxeGZDPlPYIApMF10iO8WuvUQl_PzPxQ_unAO-ZMb2EBjw7yzUyGUJZ-mIEToBgnk2FCyGPi_U1u4Pcd5dm7giqbITrN8ro/s1600/DSC02712a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRaNXD5OkmHM4SeQzBF10pEtlaWHSbE4McakXYbsiBZERcDxeGZDPlPYIApMF10iO8WuvUQl_PzPxQ_unAO-ZMb2EBjw7yzUyGUJZ-mIEToBgnk2FCyGPi_U1u4Pcd5dm7giqbITrN8ro/s320/DSC02712a.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
This lovely inflorescence is from an unknown Cryptocoryne Sp collected in Johor. It is perhaps one of my rarest Cryptocoryne in collection. A recent flowering gives me a chance to photograph this beauty. Hopefully it will be identified soon by the usual suspects in Europe. :)<br />

Unlike the Pakan version, these have longer narrower leaves in submessed form. The emersed form have shorter leaves but clear tiger stripe marking could be seen too. <br />

I was able to visit the Auriculata at another location and managed to photograph the spathe in full bloom. If you look closely, you can see some fruitflies on top of the spathe, which I belief are the agents of polination in the wild. <br />

We just came home after 6 days of exploring Central and Northern Sarawak for both known as well as new locations for aquatic plants and fishes. This time of the year is usually the dry season and river water level is supposed to be lower then usual. The trip was generally succesfull as we all came home safely despite some harrowing moments driving in the muddy logging trails of North Sarawak.<br />
<br />
We found the Cryptocoryne Bullosa in Bintulu to be in a very healthy condition both emersed as well as the submersed form. The water level was lower and we suspected just begun to rise as rain begins this week.<br />

During my trip there I took opportunity to survey the area and the weather was perfect during this trip. The Sekayam River runs from the mountains near the border with Sarawak towards the south east and joins with the mighty Kapuas. <br />

Here is Malaysia, just fresh after the 1st week of January the Chinese communities are preparing for the Lunar New Year celebration soon.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>I spend the new year away at a beach resort this year with my wife and some close friends. We had a wonderful time together, reflecting upon 2011 and contemplating 2012 with refreshed zeal and excitement.</div><div><br />
</div><div>At Borneo Echo Streams, we aim to introduce fish breeding and cultivation on our village's social enterprise development program. This program have occupied much of my time and energy last year as we seek to convert our infrastructure of collection outposts to breeding capacity. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Also in the last year we signed an MOU with a Singapore higher learning institution to provide training and exposure to students on their aquaculture program. We hope that this exposure stint with us will raise the appreciation and skills of the next generation going into the industry.</div><div><br />
</div><div>I will update the blog again soon. It is still raining heavily here in most parts due to the monsoon season. Many parts of Kuching was flooded yesterday but today the sun is out in the morning as I write. However it appears that rain will arrive later in the afternoon. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Take care and God bless!</div><div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I just returned home from Kalimantan Barat after going back and forth over the last couple of weeks. The first part of the tour, I covered the west of Kalbar while the second part I visited the eastern part of Kalbar. There are lots of interesting plants and fishes in these areas and I had opportunities to visit their natural habitats. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">One of the most remarkable plants for planted tank enthusiast as well as plants hobbyists is the Bucephalandra species. It is an aroid plant and a distant relative of Cryptocoryne. They are rhyzome plants so just tying them to a stone of driftwood should anchor them for submersed or emersed environment. The plant requires low to moderate lighting and can make a nice alternative to Anubias Barteri Var. If keeping them in emersed form, please keep them in high humidity.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There are many forms of Bucephalandra from different locations in Borneo, each pretty in their own ways.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
I just got back from exploration trip in Bengkayang, Kalimantan Barat for a couple of days. New set of clothes and today I am off to Sintang, Kalimantan Barat with 3 other buddies. I havent had time to post videos and photos yet but I hope to do so by next week.<br />

Hey guys, sorry for the long web silence. I have been very busy with a number of projects here in BES. All of which is progressing steadily and we will share about them as soon as possible. <br />
<br />
Along with photos, I plan to work on short videos here on this blog and the first step is unedited trial upload to see how this will work out. I think it will be exciting to see short clips of video from time to time on fishes, plants, exploration trips, special projects, people and life in Borneo.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, I like to share a little about these little reddish catfish from Sumatra. For those of you keeping community tanks, please give them a try as they are easy and non demanding fishes. They are not frequently available as they are not easily sourced. They are from Sumatra but adapts readily to tank with pH around 6.0. They feed on micro pellets readily too. <br />
<br />

Just wanted to share a photo of the Cryptocoryne Bullosa's spathe which is short and spots bright red flower with dark ring colar. The plant in photo is under shallow fast flowing water. Cryptocoryne Bullosa was described by Engler in 1879 and can be found in central Sarawak. Depending on the locations where the specimens are collected, they sometimes exhibit slight differences. I once had a friend who mistook Cryptocoryne Uenoi for Bullosa but flowers often is the sure way to tell. The largest species of Cryptocoryne Bullosa is found in Northern Sarawak at one particular river where their dark leaves grows to the length of nearly 1 feet long. Needless to say this variety is in deep water and collecting them in rainy season is near impossible. <br />
<br />
Happy New Year and may your 2011 be a good year from all of us at Borneo Echo Streams!<br />
<br />

I have not been posting the last few months on this blog as we were hampered by a long stretch of bad weather affecting many villages where we are developing our social enterprise. So in the lean months, we fall back to cultivating and fine horning our husbandry skills with our workers. But thank God for signs of change, so we are now starting to get fishes again. <br />
<br />
One of my favorite barbs, the Puntius Rhomboocellatus is now available at BES. The fishes are beginning to show striking colors just after 2 weeks of quarantine and conditioning. These fishes often look so beautiful in contrast to green colors of Echinodorus Quadricostatus or similar foreground plants. I will post some other fish and plant updates soon.<br />
